Electronic Press Kit

JPJQ always surprises, excites, pleases and engages audiences with their blend of tradition, ingenuity, and joyful noise.

Anchored by vocalist Julia Pinckney Jones and bassist/arranger Adam R Jones , JPJQ "Team Vancouver" features Andrew R Smith and Max Ley,  JPJQ "Team Portland" adds Timothy Van Cleave and Alexander Margitich, and JPJQ "Team Tucson" is currently in the works, with a lineup that will be announced this fall. This international quartet specializes in cross-genre, post-modern interpretations of popular songs and anthemic hits of the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s, pairing new arrangements in vintage styles with polished and tested classic jazz.

Often featuring surprise guests and collaborations with artists such as the Black Dog String Quartet, and veteran members of local Indie Rock, Jazz and Alt-Country music scenes, like Timothy Benton Roark (Rollaway), Sam Davidson (Brasstronaut), Ellen Marple (Queer as Funk), Brendan Krieg (Washboard Union), Katie Presley (March Fourth) and Stan Bock (New Tradition) JPJQ's live shows are not to be missed!

JPJQ's debut album, I Want Love, was released in April, 2016.

Julia Pinckney Jones

Julia's vocals are an unapologetic departure from the "smoky voiced chanteuses" we've come to expect. Her sound is as influenced by Aretha as by Ella, and her joy in making music always charms the audience.

Vocalist (Team Portland & Vancouver, founding member)

Adam Jones

Adam R Jones defies description. An accomplished bassist/conductor/composer/arranger, his enthusiasm, musicianship, great arrangements, and good humour are a central force in JPJQ.

Bass/Arranger, (Team Portland & Vancouver, founding member)

Timothy VanCleave

Whether playing drums in the Quartet or vibes in our acoustic trio incarnation, Timothy's dry wit and musical versatility made him a natural to join "Team Portland!"

Drums/Vibes (Team Portland)

Alexander Margitich

Educated at Boston's Berklee, and recently relocated to Portland from Brooklyn, NY, Alex adds a sweet East Coast cool to JPJQ's sound - we're thrilled to have him!

Guitar (Team Portland)

Andrew R Smith

JPJQ began with morning jam sessions featuring Mr. Smith, and his amazingly nuanced feel for JPJQ's "old-timey jazz" has made its mark on JPJQ's sound and direction.

Guitar & Vocals (Team Vancouver, Founding Member)

Max Ley

We've worked with several terrific drummers, but the combination of Max's talent, his warm and positive personality makes him the one we're always excited to return home to!

Quotes

An enjoyable collection of unique singing, playing and inventive arrangements... “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” has a brilliant phrasing of the  melody set to an exceptional feel.  The ensemble sounds great and the singing is fantastic.

- Jeff Williams, Kari-On Productions

The new album by JPJQ is full of lovely surprises! Julia Pinckney Jones' tribute to her mother is touching and showcased in the sweetest song "I Want Love" - Julia shines in this song! The musicians that are showcased are all top notch and enjoyable to listen to.... It's hard to pick just one favourite!

- Dawn-Marie Duncan, radio host 92.5 "The X"
